About Department
About the Department:
Etymology of the word chemistry comes from several sources. One theory mentions that the term chemistry may originate from the Greek word “khemeia”, which means "cast together." Another theory says the word chemistry comes from the word alchemy, which in turn is derived from the Arabic word al-kīmīā and may be ultimately derived from the ancient Egyptian word kemi, meaning black. The subject may have taken its modern form in the 18th century but the roots and ideas can be traced back to 400 BC.
Encyclopedia Britannica defines chemistry as the science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of substances (defined as elements and compounds), the transformations they undergo, and the energy that is released or absorbed during these processes.
The Department of Chemistry, GDC Kamalpur, started in 2010 but the first batch of students in (1+1+1) Three year pass course was admitted in 2011. The department introduced Honours course from the year 2020 under the TDPH/TDP CBCS system
Vision and Mission
Building a strong foundation for the students in basic and advanced academic knowledge with awareness on the achievement of past scientists and researchers is our prime vision. A strong emphasis should also be made on the practical aspects of the subject and increased consciousness about the current scientific and environmental problems.
Our mission is to equip the students to take on future challenges and encourage them to spread love for the subject among the current school going students. Also we arm our students with critical thinking and enable them to rid their neighbourhood hood of unscientific practices and beliefs.
